Iranian Counter-Drone Equipment Transferred to Houthis Through Sana’a Flights, Source Says

   Iranian personnel who arrived in Sana’a aboard one of five aircraft this week brought technical equipment designed to detect drones, trace their signals and locate their operators or control sites, a source told Sheba Intelligence.

According to the source, the equipment is intended to help the Houthis identify the origin of drones operating against their forces and provide locations that could subsequently be targeted.

Sheba Intelligence has not independently identified the equipment or established whether Iran transferred a complete system or individual components. However, the capability described by the source is consistent with integrated counter-unmanned aircraft and electronic warfare systems (C-UAS/EW) that combine radio-frequency detection and direction finding (RF/DF) with other detection and electronic countermeasure capabilities.

Such systems can passively detect radio-frequency emissions associated with a drone and its command-and-control links, determine the direction of those signals and, under suitable conditions, locate the operator or ground control station. More advanced C-UAS architectures can combine RF sensors with radar and electro-optical/infrared sensors and connect the detection layer to electronic jamming or other countermeasures.

This means the equipment described by the source could potentially serve a broader role than simply detecting incoming drones. If integrated into the Houthis' existing command-and-control network, it could help establish a detect–locate–counter chain in which a drone or its control link is detected, its operator's approximate position is established, and that information is passed to another system for disruption or targeting.

The precise capability would depend heavily on the type of drone being tracked. RF-based systems are generally more effective against aircraft maintaining active command, telemetry or video links, while autonomously operating drones with limited radio emissions can require additional radar or optical detection.

 

The Five Sana’a Flights

The disclosure adds a new dimension to two earlier reports by Sheba Intelligence concerning unusual air traffic at Sana’a International Airport.

Five aircraft arrived at the airport on Wednesday, the highest number recorded there in a single day in nearly 11 months. Technical sources told Sheba Intelligence that three entered Yemeni airspace without transmitting publicly available identification data, while two others arrived from Djibouti and were identified through flight-tracking data as UN-chartered aircraft. 

Dr Abdulqader Al-Kharraz later said information available to him indicated that one of the aircraft had brought an Omani official and an Iranian official to Sana’a. According to Al-Kharraz, the same aircraft later departed carrying the remains of Iranian nationals, wounded Iranians and injured Houthi members. He did not identify the officials or specify the aircraft involved, and Sheba Intelligence could not independently verify those claims. 

The flights had already prompted concern within the internationally recognised Yemeni government. A government source previously told Sheba Intelligence that authorities were considering suspending UN flights to Sana’a amid suspicions that humanitarian flight permits could be exploited to move dual-use materials or foreign specialists into Houthi-controlled territory under false identities. 

The latest information raises the possibility that the unusual flight activity involved not only the movement of officials, wounded personnel and remains, but also the transfer of specialised Iranian counter-drone and electronic-warfare equipment.

At this stage, Sheba Intelligence cannot confirm the system's manufacturer, model, operational range or whether all components required for a complete C-UAS/EW capability were delivered. The available information nevertheless points to a potential effort to strengthen the Houthis' ability not only to detect hostile drones, but also to locate the networks operating them and support subsequent countermeasures or strikes against their operating sites.
