Yemeni Military Declares ‘Kill Box’ Around Mokha as Defence Council Signals Wider Response

   Yemen’s armed forces have designated a military targeting zone around Mokha on the western coast, describing it as a “kill box” in which they intend to use a range of weapons and firepower against Houthi military movements. The National Defence Council, meanwhile, said the deterrence operation would not be confined to a single front or area.

The military spokesperson released a map outlining the zone and urged civilians to avoid the Taiz–Mokha road until further notice and stay away from Houthi personnel, equipment and gathering points.

In military terminology, a “kill box” is a geographically defined area used to coordinate fire against military targets. In this announcement, it identifies the area where Yemeni forces intend to engage Houthi movements. The designation does not establish ground control, confirm that strikes have begun throughout the zone, or make everyone within its boundaries a military target.

The announcement and accompanying warning suggest preparations for intensified strikes around Mokha, although the military provided no details on the timing, scale or forces involved.

Signalling a potentially broader response, the National Defence Council said the armed forces would confront threats and Houthi movements across multiple theatres of operations. It maintained that the state could regain the initiative and that the repositioning of government forces along the western coast did not alter the wider campaign to restore state institutions.

The council said temporary Houthi advances would not enable the group to impose lasting political or territorial changes by force.

Linking the fighting to Red Sea security, it pledged to prevent Yemen’s coasts and islands from becoming launchpads for threats against the country, its neighbours and international shipping. It called on the UN Security Council, its permanent members and Red Sea littoral states to fulfil their responsibilities, urging international partners to support the government in protecting Yemen’s territory, sovereignty and territorial waters.

Yemen was not asking others to fight its war, the council said, but to implement relevant international resolutions.

The council also condemned renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, expressed solidarity with the kingdom and praised what it described as military victories in Marib, Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda, underscoring that the announced response extends beyond the targeting zone around Mokha.
