Al-Qaeda attack leaves five soldiers dead in Yemen’s Abyan
On Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at least five Yemeni soldiers were killed in clashes with Al-Qaeda militants in Abyan province. The militants attacked the Southern Transitional Council (STC) soldiers in Wadi Omran in Abyan. The militants failed to seize the area and were forced to retreat. AQAP has been intensifying its attacks against the UAE-backed STC in Yemen’s south.
In a recent report by the United Nations, more than 80,000 Yemeni people have been affected by heavy rains and floods since the beginning of 2023. Between January and July 2023, 11,484 families, comprising approximately 80,338 individuals, were impacted by harsh weather conditions across Yemen.
Over the last two days, landmine explosions killed three civilians in Al-Jawf province, northeastern Yemen. One of them was herding his livestock in the Alghail district. The two others were killed in another landmine blast while traveling in their vehicle in Khab Waa Saha’af district.
The United Nations said on Thursday that most of the oil from the decaying FSO Safer tanker off war-torn Yemen has been successfully transferred to a replacement vessel to prevent a potentially catastrophic spill. Approximately 55 percent of the 1.14 million barrels of Marib light crude have been moved to the new tanker in the past seven days. The UN aims to complete the entire transfer in less than three weeks.
Seven civilians were injured on Wednesday in a hand grenade explosion in Aden to the south of Yemen. The victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, ranging from critical to moderate and minor.
